WHAT TO DO

When leading your child in Balloon Breathing, use your hand to demonstrate the way the belly should rise and fall. Using your hands will also provide a visual guide to the pace at which your child should be inhaling and exhaling. As an alternative, try using a Hoberman Sphere (Putting it All Together), one of the recommended props, as a visual guide to pacing and a wonderfully engaging point of focus for your child. If your child is willing to close his eyes while practicing Balloon Breath, you can provide a visual focus by encouraging him to imagine the color of his “balloon.”

WHAT TO SAY

Sit or stand up tall or lie down. Place Balloon Breath your hands gently on your lower belly. Close your eyes. Imagine your belly is a balloon. To inflate your balloon belly, breathe in slowly through your nose, filling up your balloon belly. That’s right, stick your belly out to fill it up all the way. Now slowly exhale and feel your balloon belly deflate. Let all that stale air out of the balloon to escape out through your nose. (Repeat 4 to 6 times.) What did you notice? How do you feel?

WHAT TO DO

This is a wonderfully simple first breathing exercise for your youngest child. Candle Breath encourages an extended exhale, which stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system and has a calming effect. To avoid over-oxygenation, this breath should be practiced slowly no more than five times with the emphasis on the exhale. For extra fun, have your child hold up the same number of fingers as his age. As with any real or imaginary exercise involving a candle, fire, or flame, be sure to remind your child of your family’s fire safety rules.

WHAT TO SAY

Sit or stand up tall. Clasp your hands in front of you. Bring your pointing fingers together and point them up. There’s your candle! Imagine there is a flame on top. Breathe in deeply through your nose to fill up your belly. Now slowly blow out your candle . let’s do that two more times.
